About Our Services

Common questions about what SLP Ltd does and the sectors we operate in.

What types of projects does SLP Ltd specialise in?
SLP Ltd specialises in a broad range of civil engineering and construction projects. Our core disciplines include groundworks and foundations, drainage and utilities installation, structural concrete works, earthworks, road and infrastructure construction, and specialist subcontracting packages. We work across residential, commercial, industrial, and public-sector environments, adapting our approach to the precise demands of each project. Whether you require a discrete groundworks package or full civil engineering delivery across a large-scale development, our experienced team is equipped to deliver to the highest standard.
Which geographical areas does SLP Ltd cover?
SLP Ltd operates across the United Kingdom, with a strong presence in the Midlands and surrounding regions. We regularly work with principal contractors, developers, and local authorities across England and Wales. For particularly large or specialist projects, we are also able to mobilise nationally. Our team is experienced in managing the logistics of working across multiple sites simultaneously, and our project management systems ensure consistent quality and communication regardless of location. Please get in touch via our contact page to discuss whether your site falls within our operating range.
Do you work with residential clients as well as commercial developers?
Yes. While a significant portion of our workload involves commercial developers, housebuilders, and principal contractors, we also take on projects for private residential clients where our specialist expertise is required. This includes foundations, drainage, and groundworks for self-build homes, extensions, and bespoke residential developments. We treat every client — large or small — with the same level of professionalism, transparency, and dedication to delivering results on time and within budget. Contact us today to discuss your residential project requirements.
Can SLP Ltd act as a principal contractor on a project?
Yes, SLP Ltd has the capability and accreditation to act as the principal contractor on qualifying projects under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015). In this role, we take full responsibility for planning, managing, monitoring, and coordinating health and safety during the construction phase. Our team works closely with designers, clients, and specialist subcontractors to ensure all legal duties are met and that the project is delivered safely and efficiently. We are equally comfortable working as a specialist subcontractor within a larger programme managed by another principal contractor.

Process & Planning Questions

Answers to the most common questions about how we plan, programme, and deliver our work.

How do I get started with SLP Ltd?
Getting started is simple. You can reach us via our contact page, by telephone, or by email. We'll arrange an initial conversation to understand your project requirements, timescales, and budget parameters. For larger or more complex projects, we may request a site visit to carry out a feasibility assessment before preparing a detailed programme or tender. Our team aims to respond to all new enquiries within one working day, and we pride ourselves on giving clear, honest advice from the very first conversation — with no obligation and no jargon.
How long does it take to receive a quote from SLP Ltd?
Turnaround time for quotations depends on the complexity and size of the project. For smaller, well-defined packages, we typically aim to return a written quotation within three to five working days of receiving all necessary information, including drawings, specifications, and site surveys. For larger or more complex tender submissions, we will agree a programme for our return with you at the outset. We never rush our estimates — accuracy matters more than speed when it comes to pricing — but we always work to meet client deadlines wherever possible.
Will SLP Ltd provide a project programme and regular progress updates?
Absolutely. Before commencing work on site, we prepare a detailed construction programme that identifies key milestones, resource allocations, and critical path activities. This is shared with the client and updated throughout the project as conditions evolve. Regular progress meetings — weekly or fortnightly depending on project scale — keep all stakeholders informed. We also provide written progress reports, photographic records, and lookahead programmes as standard. Transparency and communication are fundamental to how we work, and our clients consistently highlight this as one of our greatest strengths.
What happens if unforeseen ground conditions are encountered during works?
Unforeseen ground conditions — such as unexpected buried obstructions, unstable ground, or contaminated material — are a risk inherent in all groundworks and civil engineering projects. When such conditions are encountered, SLP Ltd will immediately notify the client and relevant design professionals, document the situation thoroughly with photographs and records, and provide options for how the issue can be resolved. Any variation to the agreed scope of works will be discussed and agreed in writing before proceeding. We pride ourselves on being proactive and transparent in these situations rather than simply pressing ahead and presenting a surprise at the end.

Pricing & Commercial Questions

Understanding how we cost our work and what influences the price of your project.

How does SLP Ltd price its work?
We price our work based on the specific scope, complexity, programme, and site conditions of each individual project. Our estimating team carefully analyses drawings, specifications, ground investigation reports, and programme requirements before building up a detailed cost submission. We price on a fixed-price lump sum basis where the scope is clearly defined, or alternatively on a schedule of rates basis for projects where quantities are approximate or subject to change. We never include hidden costs or vague provisional sums without explaining exactly what they cover and why they are included.
What factors can affect the cost of a project?
A number of factors can influence the overall cost of a civil engineering or groundworks project. Key considerations include the ground conditions and soil type, the depth and extent of excavations, proximity to existing services and structures, site access constraints, the programme duration and whether any out-of-hours working is required, the specification of materials, and the level of design complexity. Environmental considerations — such as the need for
